SUMMARY:Deep Roots 2022 Winter/Spring Series - Libby Rae Watson
DESCRIPTION:Libby Rae Watson grew up in Mississippi a few blocks from the Gulf of Mexico. Not exactly the heart of the Delta and the delta blues\, but just a few hours drive away. Captivated by the music\, she became deeply involved with the Delta in the mid 1970’s\, searching\, exploring\, documenting\, meeting and playing with all the blues artists she could find. People like Big Joe Williams\, Furry Lewis\, Johnny Woods\, Eugene Powell\, Son Thomas and many more. Legends and obscurities. She was a 22 year old  girl venturing into places not many would dare to enter. But it was her friendship with Hollandale’s Sam Chatmon that influenced her the most. They became fast friends from day one and remained that way until his death in 1983\, where Libby Rae performed “Sitting On Top Of The World” at his funeral. Now\, after years of staying close to home with her band\, The Liberaetors\, Libby Rae has come back to the old delta Blues where she started….and back to the road. \nLibby Rae has performed at many festivals over her career….the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival\,  King Biscuit Festival\, Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale\, MS\, The Mighty Mississippi River Festival in Greenville\, MS\, and The Sam Chatmon Festival in Hollandale\, MS to name a few. She has performed House Concerts from Canada to Birdie’s Roadhouse in Varnado\, La…from the Shack Up Inn in Clarksdale\, MS to the FloraBama in Orange Beach\, AL and has been a semi-finalist multiple years at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. She has toured with Toronto based Bluesman\, Doc MacLean\, and with Rambling Steve Gardner\, Bill Steber\, and Wes Lee as the Jericho Road Show. \nA classic Mississippi blueswoman/singer songwriter…Libby Rae Watson. \nhttps://www.libbyrae.com \n \n

SUMMARY:Deep Roots 2022 Winter/Spring Series - Blackwater Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Blackwater Trio is a folk/rock band that uses two guitars\, a violin and three-part harmony to evoke a powerful response from their audience.  Based in Clarksdale\, Mississippi\, the Trio was formed in the fall of 2013 when violinist Alice Hasen\, then a high school band director\, sat in with local guitarists Walt Busby and Seth Stroud.  The two Delta natives quickly turned the Vermont classical violinist to the “dark side” and the group gained popularity. The individual influences of Stroud\, Busby and Hasen are widely varied: Led Zeppelin\, the Beatles\, Neil Young\, Crosby Stills & Nash\, the Fleet Foxes\, Stephane Grappelli\, Natalie McMaster\, and the classical canon\, just to name a few.  The sound that emerges is a refreshing mix of opposites – Stroud’s sometimes angelic\, sometimes rough-hewn vocals; Busby’s psychedelic electric guitar layered over intricate acoustic patterns; Hasen’s honed technique supporting edgier styles outside the bounds of either violin or fiddle. The group released their debut album\, Cheshire Moon\, in August 2017.  Touring regularly through Mississippi\, Tennessee\, Arkansas and up the East Coast\, the Trio is a favorite of local festivals and has been featured in media including Delta Magazine and Memphis’ WEVL radio. Their live shows include original music as well as reinterpreted covers. Says culture blog Delta Bohemian: “With an eclectic medley of familiar yet made-their-own-tunes and with now many of their own songs\, this band is uniquely peerless.”\n\nhttps://blackwatertrio.com

SUMMARY:Deep Roots 2022 Winter/Spring Series - Mark "Muleman" Massey
DESCRIPTION:Born in the Mississippi Delta\, Mark learned the true meaning of the Blues down on Parchman Farm Penitentiary. He was taught by David Kimbrough\, the son of Jr. Kimbrough\, how to play the guitar inside Parchman\, and soon after\, Mark joined the Parchman Prison Band. After Mark left Parchman\, he followed his love for the Blues towards bettering himself. Along the way\, he met the Blues legend Big Jack Johnson. He became both a mentor and friend to Mark and even gave Mark the nickname “Muleman”. \n\n\nThe name stuck ever since. \n\n\n25 years later\, Muleman has played a host of festivals all across Mississippi including opening for B.B. King at his annual homecoming festival the last few years B.B. King performed. In 2017\, Muleman traveled overseas to Crissier\, Switzerland to perform at the Blues Rules Crissier Festival\, and Bollenblues4 in the Netherlands as well as Haarlem\, Holland. \n\n\nMuleman has been featured on the online blues show Moonshine and Mojo Hands and the culinary television show\, Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. He is the youngest white Blues musician to be on a Mississippi Blues Trail Marker located at the front gates of Parchman Farm. In 2016\, Muleman’s story was documented by audio recordings into the Library of Congress. Muleman’s songs and aspiring story have touched his fans from all over the world. The combination of Muleman’s distinguished voice and captivating lyricism is a force to be reckoned with. \nhttps://markmulemanmassey.wixsite.com/mysite
