SUMMARY:Deep Roots 2026 Winter Series - The Lions of Winter @ Backdraft
DESCRIPTION:The Lions of Winter are a trio of Delta musicians who joyfully offer up the best in jazz\, swing and blues whenever and wherever asked. Robin Webb (keyboard) met Rogers Varner (saxophone)  met at Delta State University as part of the school’s jazz band and decided to play expand their performing opportunities by accepting invitations to various local and regional gigs\, including weddings\, BBQs\, pool parties\, barn dances\, fish fries\, honky-tonks and juke joints.  The trio sometimes adds a vocalist\, and occasionally a bass player and another horn.  Their set list includes jazz standards from the Great American Songbook such as “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore\,” “Basin Street Blues\,” “All of Me\,” “Autumn Leaves\,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)\,” as well as classics such as “St. James Infirmary\,” “One Way Out\,” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” Improvisation is the rule for this talented trio\, and the Lions of Winter can be counted on to be well-mannered\, entertaining\, and on time\, all the time.

SUMMARY:Deep Roots 2026 Winter Series - Mike Slaton @ Bar Fontaine
DESCRIPTION:Mike Slaton starting picking and singing after his parents snuck him backstage on his fifth birthday to meet Willie Nelson after a concert in Shreveport\, Louisiana.  He immediately got ‘bit’ by the ‘music bug’ and gave his first live performance at his kindergarten talent show\, singing “On The Road Again.”  Born and raised in Greenville\, Mississippi\, Slaton lived in Nashville five years before moving to North Carolina to write and perform while working as an organic farmer. He moved back home to Greenville to be close to family and the ‘long\, dark\, complex memory of the Delta that inspires me and feeds my soul.’   His warm and poetic songs are influenced by meaningful experiences with his family and friends in the here and now and the memories of ancestors left behind and fall comfortably in the musical realm of Townes Van Zandt\, John Prine\, Steve Earle and Gillian Welch. Slaton has released multiple solo acoustic recordings of his original songs\, along with a six-song EP recorded with his band The Wheels in Wilmington\, North Carolina. He has opened for the Avett Brothers\, Lucero\, Chatham County Line\, Col. Bruce Hampton\, Cary Hudson\, and T-Model Ford. Currently\, Mike Slaton is focusing on writing and completing songs to record and release a record inspired by his home state of Mississippi.

He started taking guitar lessons at an early age and played in various rock bands during high school. While attending college at Cortland College in New York\, Billy began honing his writing skills for a performing duo. After graduation\, Maines relocated to Boulder\, Colorado\, where the wide open music scene inspired his writing and encouraged his performing with different bands up and down the ‘front range’ of the Rockies. He plays guitar\, harmonica\, mandolin\, and fiddle across genres of Americana\, Alternative Rock and the Blues. He credits his main musical influences as The Band\, Neil Young\, Muddy Waters\, and Bob Dylan. After moving to the Mississippi Delta in 2004\, he learned to appreciate the rich heritage of the music of Mississippi\, began to perform as a solo artist and continues to do so today. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:This hot-shot southpaw guitarist from Nimes\, France\, funded his move to the States by selling his Gibson Les Paul guitar. He’s forged through a rough-and-tumble 20 years\, from jamming with blues legends to playing for hire. “I grew up on all American music — Rock ’n’ Roll and Blues — but back when I was playing in France I felt somewhat like a copycat\,” Frenchie says. “But as soon as I landed in the U.S. I felt at home\, because this was where the music I loved was born.” Although he’s played with many greats over the years\, Frenchie says “the highlight of my musical career was becoming a U.S. citizen” in August 2016. America has inspired Kevin “Frenchie” Sciou to follow his own path. From his humble beginnings to the sophomore release of his Frenchie’s Blues Destroyers album Praise: He defiantly beat the odds in his pursuit of the American Dream.”

DESCRIPTION:Mason Honnoll  is a singer/songwriter hailing from Columbus\, MS. Mason writes and sings music for “simple folks”–storytelling songs with catchy\, singable melodies and accessible lyrics. Having tasted the music business while growing up traveling with his dad’s southern gospel band on the weekends\, it’s no surprise that he ended up as a musician himself. With influences from a wide range of old and new country\, southern rock\, and gospel artists\, Mason seems at home in a ball cap as much as the cowboy hat and is inspired by the writers of yesteryear. His idols are Johnny Cash\, Jamey Johnson\, and Lynyrd Skynyrd\, and it shows. Mason’s debut recording effort\, a ten song collection of studio recordings titled Just The Way I Am\, was released in late spring 2022.

DESCRIPTION:Gramm Phillips\, a proud native of Clarksdale\, Mississippi\, comes from a multigenerational family of musicians\, whether they played for church\, taught in schools\, or rocked and rolled for a living. After learning about the contributions of local Clarksdale musicians\, he pursued his own interests in providing entertainment to the needs of Delta house parties\, local events\, and surrounding eateries and music venues beginning in his college days and in the years that followed. After graduating from Delta State University with a degree in Business in 2012 and his Master’s in 2013\, he spent three and a half years as a contracted musician with Carnival Cruise Line\, working on cruise ships within the company’s fleet based out of Charleston\, SC\, Miami\, FL\, Galveston\, TX\, and even Sydney\, Australia. He now resides back home in Clarksdale with his wife\, Anna Kathryn\, and their two children\, Isaac and Ellie Kate\, where he works with local teens through First Presbyterian Church and continues to entertain. \n

He moved back home to Greenville to be close to family and the ‘long\, dark\, complex memory of the Delta that inspires me and feeds my soul.’ \nHis warm and poetic songs are influenced by meaningful experiences with his family and friends in the here and now and the memories of ancestors left behind and fall comfortably in the musical realm of Townes Van Zandt\, John Prine\, Steve Earle and Gillian Welch. \nSlaton has released multiple solo acoustic recordings of his original songs\, along with a six-song EP recorded with his band The Wheels in Wilmington\, North Carolina. He has opened for the Avett Brothers\, Lucero\, Chatham County Line\, Col. Bruce Hampton\, Cary Hudson\, and T-Model Ford. \nCurrently\, Mike Slaton is focusing on writing and completing songs to record and release a record inspired by his home state of Mississippi.

DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in the Mississippi Delta\, ‘Cadillac’ Dennis’ musical journey began with singing and playing drums with the church choir as a kid.  While majoring in music at Mississippi Valley State University\, he began dabbling with guitar and piano.  This led to his playing in a number of Gospel bands in his twenties\, before starting to play guitar for various Blues artists. Dennis formed his own band\, the Big Time Rhythm & Blues Band in the spring of 2010 and booked performances throughout the South\, Northwest\, and even Hawaii.  He recently released a single\, “2X Woman”\, which he co-produced with the help of another Deep Roots musician\, Eric Edwards.

DESCRIPTION:Jeff McCreary is a singer-songwriter from the Delta town of Cleveland\, Mississippi. Born and raised in between Cleveland and the nearby town of Merigold\, McCreary stuck around even after a stint in Europe because of family and the irresistible draw of the Delta. McCreary’s music is the wry\, hard-earned expression of life and time in the mystic region famously described as “the most Southern place on earth.” \nAfter discovering Bob Dylan at age 16\, McCreary picked up the guitar and a pen. Inspired by Dylan’s music\, as well as Texas songwriter Townes Van Zandt\, he began to write his own songs based on a style that could be folk\, rock\, red dirt country\, anthemic\, Shakespearean\, sardonic\, heartwarming\, dark\, humorous\, or any/all of the above. Simply put\, McCreary explores all facets of the broad genre of Americana in his writing and playing. He writes with a specificity that makes his music all the more relatable\, offering an honest look at life and his surroundings. Songwriting is his passion to him\, it feels like it’s what he’s on earth to do. “They show up sometimes out of the blue\,” he says of his songs. “It’s like a gift.”

DESCRIPTION:Gramm Phillips\, a proud native of Clarksdale\, Mississippi\, comes from a multigenerational family of musicians\, whether they played for church\, taught in schools\, or rocked and rolled for a living. After learning about the contributions of local Clarksdale musicians\, he pursued his own interests in providing entertainment to the needs of Delta house parties\, local events\, and surrounding eateries and music venues beginning in his college days and in the years that followed. After graduating from Delta State University with a degree in Business in 2012 and his Master’s in 2013\, he spent three and a half years as a contracted musician with Carnival Cruise Line\, working on cruise ships within the company’s fleet based out of Charleston\, SC\, Miami\, FL\, Galveston\, TX\, and even Sydney\, Australia. He now resides back home in Clarksdale with his wife\, Anna Kathryn\, and their two children\, Isaac and Ellie Kate\, where he works with local teens through First Presbyterian Church and continues to entertain.

DESCRIPTION:Americana singer/songwriter Billy Maines grew up in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains in a village on the Hudson River near Woodstock\, New York. He started taking guitar lessons at an early age and played in various rock bands during high school. While attending college at Cortland College in New York\, Billy began honing his writing skills for a performing duo. \nAfter graduation\, Maines relocated to Boulder\, Colorado\, where the wide open music scene inspired his writing and encouraged his performing with different bands up and down the ‘front range’ of the Rockies. He plays guitar\, harmonica\, mandolin\, and fiddle across genres of Americana\, Alternative Rock and the Blues. DESCRIPTION:Pianist Robin Webb has performed as a classical and cocktail soloist\, in addition to combo and collaborative work on all seven continents\, including Antarctica. Cruise ships\, global destination resorts\, New York and European cabaret houses and clubs\, theatres on Broadway\, London’s West End and regional cities kept Robin’s performance schedule busy before returning to his boyhood home\, the Mississippi Delta. Since returning to the Delta\, Robin has been pursuing a newfound love for jazz piano\, having attended the Czech Republic Jazz Workshop\, Stanford University Jazz Workshop\, and University of North Texas workshops. Robin holds a doctorate degree in music.
