SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Winter Series - Alanna Mosley @ Backdraft
DESCRIPTION:Alanna Mosley is a singer-songwriter from Carrollton\, Mississippi. Her music—best described as Americana or roots—blurs genre lines\, and her cover tune catalog spans decades. With guitar in hand\, Mosley is an unstoppable jukebox of great music that invites the listener to keep humming along. \nAt an early age\, Mosley was soaking in her music education: 90s guitar queens Patty Griffin and Shawn Colvin\, country rockers like Dwight Yoakam and Steve Earle\, and the gauntlet of great singer-songwriters from Carole King to Brandi Carlile. She began playing guitar at the age of 12 and hasn’t quit since. Over the years\, Mosley has built an impressive repertoire of cover songs while also honing her own songwriting skills. She released an EP of original music in 2014\, and in 2016 she was the winner of the prestigious Jimmie Rodgers Songwriting Competition. After living and gigging in Charlotte\, North Carolina for several years\, she returned to the Mississippi Delta in full force\, constantly filling her calendar with festival\, radio\, restaurant\, and private gigs. \nIt seems that\, all over the southeast\, Mosley is doing a great job of connecting with people through music. Her artistry can be summed up in the words of her friend and fellow creative\, Geoff Latham: “Alanna Mosley’s appeal is her warmth and clearly genuine enjoyment of sharing her musical gifts with her audience. When Alanna performs\, she isn’t playing music for you\, she’s inviting you to sing along and enjoy the song with her… Though her music roots are sunk deep in the loamy soil of Delta Blues\, her branches cast a wide shadow over country\, rock\, pop\, and bluegrass\, and it’s a shade that begs the listener to kick off their shoes\, have a seat\, and stay a while.” If you’re a lover of great music in need of some shade\, find out where Alanna Mosley might be playing near you at www.alannamosley.com.

SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Winter Series - Variety @ 8 West Grille
DESCRIPTION:Variety is the popular ‘old school’ R&B/soul duo of siblings Eric Edwards and Shara White from Cleveland\, Mississippi. They have been performing together across the country for more than 25 years. Their upbeat repertoire is the kind of music that\, according to Eric\, makes audiences want to ‘eat barbecue and drink cold beer.’ \n\n\nEric and Shara\, born and raised in the Mississippi Delta\, grew up in a musical home where they both started playing and singing at the early ages of 5 and 6 years old\, respectively. While citing their father\, Eddie Lee Edwards\, as their primary musical influence\, they also list Whitney Houston\, Mariah Carey\, Michael Jackson\, Prince\, and Quincy Jones as musicians whom they admire and respect. Both Eric and Shara are quick to acknowledge the contributions of their former band director\, Mr. James Stamps\, and musical friends Dr. Alphonso Sanders and Joe Johnson in encouraging and shaping the duo’s musical development and direction. \n\n\nEric’s voice has been compared to the Isley Brothers\, and Shara’s voice draws comparisons to Whitney Houston\, but they both feel that God has given them each a unique voice. Although known for their R&B style\, the duo is also deeply rooted in gospel music. The duo has released an album together titled There Is No One Else\, and in addition to writing original music for God’s Anointed Voices\, Eric has released an R&B project titled Those Vinyl Days!

SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Winter Series - Charles Sullivan @ Darry's Food & Drink
DESCRIPTION:Singer/songwriter Charles Sullivan is a member of the Delta String Band\, an Americana band based out of Greenville\, Mississippi. Similar to what the band presents\, Sullivan sings a variety of styles\, from folk and bluegrass to straight-up country. With influences like bluegrass great Ralph Stanley\, folk master John Prine\, pure country kings Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings\, and even genre-fusing groups like the Grateful Dead\, Sullivan brings his own flavor to the music he plays\, and that “old school way” means playing music in its truest\, purest\, stripped-down form.

SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Winter Series - Danny Abraham @ Backdraft
DESCRIPTION:Local piano man and well-known Cleveland men’s clothier\, Danny Abraham\, has been entertaining Deltans and beyond since he was a college student. “I started playing piano when I was six years old and played in bands and as a solo artist for all of my years afterwards. I played when I was at Ole Miss with a group that went all over recruiting students and was able to share the stage with celebrities like Bob Hope and others. When I returned to Cleveland\, to attend Delta State\, I joined the campus music group Renaissance\, also a recruiting arm for the school\, and we literally toured all over the world. Even after I opened my store\, Abraham’s\, I continued to play with people whenever and wherever I could.” \nAbraham released his first CD\, a Gospel collection of all original compositions titled\, Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me\, in 2020. The project\, produced by award-winning musician Gordon Mote\, was a ‘labor of love and faith.’

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Fall Series - Jake & the Pearl St. Jumpers @ Airport Grocery
DESCRIPTION:Jake and the Pearl Street Jumpers got their band’s name from the street they grew up on in Cleveland. “When I was in elementary school\, in about the fifth grade\, my friends and I were trying to do music. The majority of us lived on Pearl Street. I was the leader of the group\, so we called ourselves Jake and the Pearl Street Jumpers.” \nWith access to music lessons in school and the exposure to music in the Pentecostal church he attended\, Jake got a good background in music to help get a band started. “And we listened to the radio every chance we had\,” Jake says. “We listened to every song by every artist\, over and over again.” \n“We are upbeat and we have fun\, but there is no drinking or swearing on my stage. We have the cleanest band and the best attitude of any band I’ve ever seen\, and that’s the reason we have been going for so long.” \nWhether it’s in a smoky club\, on a flatbed trailer\, at a festival\, or at a wedding reception\, when Jake and the Pearl Street Jumpers take the stage\, it’s a sure bet that the dance floor will be crowded. For over forty-five years\, the band has played Motown and rhythm and blues tunes for thousands of people across the Delta and as far away as Chicago.

SUMMARY:Billy Maines @ Farmers-Bakers-Makers Market
DESCRIPTION:American singer/songwriter Billy Maines grew up in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains in a village on the Hudson River near Woodstock\, New York. He started taking guitar lessons at an early age and played in various rock bands during high school. While attending college at Cortland College in New York\, Billy began honing his writing skills for a performing duo. \nAfter graduation\, Maines relocated to Boulder\, Colorado\, where the wide open music scene inspired his writing and encouraged his performing with different bands up and down the ‘front range’ of the Rockies. He plays guitar\, harmonica\, mandolin\, and fiddle across genres of Americana\, Alternative Rock and the Blues. He credits his main musical influences as The Band\, Neil Young\, Muddy Waters\, and Bob Dylan. \nAfter moving to the Mississippi Delta in 2004\, he learned to appreciate the rich heritage of the music of Mississippi and formed an original rock band called The Rind. After the band dissolved\, Billy began to perform as a solo artist and continues to do so today. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/billymainesmusicman

Even after I opened my store\, Abraham’s\, I continued to play with people whenever and wherever I could.” \nDanny’s first CD\, Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me\, was a labor of love and faith. SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Fall Series - Mississippi Mason @ Airport Grocery
DESCRIPTION:Mississippi Mason is a singer/songwriter hailing from Columbus\, MS. Mason writes and sings music for “simple folks”–storytelling songs with catchy\, singable melodies and accessible lyrics. Having tasted the music business while growing up traveling with his dad’s southern gospel band on the weekends\, it’s no surprise that he ended up as a musician himself. \nWith influences from a wide range of old and new country\, southern rock\, and gospel artists\, Mason seems at home in a ball cap as much as the cowboy hat to which he’s dedicated an entire song. As a writer\, he seems less influenced by the bro-country of the last decade and more inspired by the writers of yesteryear. His idols are Johnny Cash\, Jamey Johnson\, and Lynyrd Skynyrd\, and it shows. There’s even a quality to his voice that seems to belong in a bygone era–his smooth tone mimics mid-century country balladeer Jim Reeves at some points\, and at others a 20th-century country tone that could have put him in the running to be the fifth member of the Highwaymen. \nMason’s newest recording effort\, a ten song collection of studio recordings titled Just The Way I Am\, shows his range as a writer. The album\, released in May 2022\, opens with the clearly southern rock anthem “Don’t Take Me Back\,” followed by the gothic-country plea to “Say a Prayer” for him on judgement day\, before transitioning to the carefree and relatable “Dancing In The Dark” (an ode to nonchalance as it relates to what life throws at you). The lighthearted “Tombigbee Bend” leads into the longing of “Outskirts of Heaven” and the romance of “Hey Babe.”  In a nod to the traditional sounds of Nashville\, Mason offers up his original song\, “Better On My Own” and a cover of the Cash classic\, “Folsom Prison Blues.” The project moves toward a conclusion with an upbeat tribute to the grandfather who handed down “This Cowboy Hat of Mine\,” and ends with a journey down “The Weary Road.” \nMason is a recent graduate from the DMI Entertainment Industry Studies program at Delta State University in Cleveland\, Mississippi\, and is signed to Cotton Row Record Company. He is currently marketing\, promoting\, and touring in support of his new album. The ultimate dream for Mason? To sing from the stage of the Grand Ole Opry and have his songs broadcast over WSM. It seems that he is well on his way. Just like country greats before him\, he writes and sings with a rugged honesty that comes across as absolutely genuine. www.mississippimason.com

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Fall Series - Alanna Mosley @ Airport Grocery

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Fall Series - Variety @ Papa Roc's

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Fall Series - Billy Maines @ Airport Grocery
DESCRIPTION:Americana singer/songwriter Billy Maines grew up in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains in a village on the Hudson River near Woodstock\, New York.
