SUMMARY:2024 Deep Roots Spring Series - Mike 'Delta Sun' Slaton @ 8 West Grille
DESCRIPTION:Mike Slaton starting picking and singing after his parents snuck him backstage on his fifth birthday to meet Willie Nelson after a concert in Shreveport\, Louisiana.  He immediately got ‘bit’ by the ‘music bug’ and gave his first live performance at his kindergarten talent show\, singing “On The Road Again.” Born and raised in Greenville\, Mississippi\, Slaton lived in Nashville five years before moving to North Carolina to write and perform while working as an organic farmer. He moved back home to Greenville to be close to family and the ‘long\, dark\, complex memory of the Delta that inspires me and feeds my soul.’ His warm and poetic songs are influenced by meaningful experiences with his family and friends in the here and now and the memories of ancestors left behind and fall comfortably in the musical realm of Townes Van Zandt\, John Prine\, Steve Earle and Gillian Welch. Slaton has released multiple solo acoustic recordings of his original songs\, along with a six-song EP recorded with his band\, The Wheels\, in Wilmington\, North Carolina. He has opened for the Avett Brothers\, Lucero\, Chatham County Line\, Col. Bruce Hampton\, Cary Hudson\, and T-Model Ford. Currently\, Mike Slaton is focusing on writing and completing songs to record and release a record inspired by his home state of Mississippi.

DESCRIPTION:The Lions of Winter are a trio of Delta musicians who joyfully offer up the best in jazz\, swing and blues whenever and wherever asked. The trio consists of Robin Webb on keyboard\, Josh Armstrong on drums\, and Rogers Varner on sax.  The three met at Delta State University as part of the school’s jazz band and decided to play expand their performing opportunities by accepting invitations to various local and regional gigs\, including weddings\, BBQs\, pool parties\, barn dances\, fish fries\, honky-tonks and juke joints.  Improvisation is the rule for this talented trio\, and the Lions of Winter can be counted on to be well-mannered\, entertaining\, and on time\, all the time.

His original music reflects his life experiences and for over 30 years\, he has toured the country\, headlining Blues clubs and festivals\, including the Juke Joint Festival\, Unity Festival\, World Catfish Festival\, Que on the Yazoo\, and the Sam Chatmon Festival\, both as a solo artist and with his band\, The Juke Daddys. Mississippi Marshall is a two-time International Blues Challenge Semi-Finalist and a Mississippi Music Foundation award winner for Best Instrumental.  Marshall and his grandson\, Grayson\, were semifinalists  at the 2024 International Blues Challenge in Memphis\, TN. He recently released his fourth album titled I Believe I’ll Go Back Home.

DESCRIPTION:Danny Abraham\, well-known Cleveland men’s clothier\, started playing piano when he was six years old and played in bands and as a solo artist throughout his youth. “I played when I was at Ole Miss with a group that went all over recruiting students and was able to share the stage with celebrities like Bob Hope and others\,” says Abraham. When I returned to Cleveland\, to attend Delta State\, I joined the campus music group Renaissance\, and we literally toured all over the world.” Danny’s first CD\, Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me\, was a labor of love and faith. The gospel collection of all original compositions was produced by the legendary Gordon Mote and recorded in Nashville. \nTricia Walker is a singer and songwriter whose songs have been recorded by Faith Hill\, Patty Loveless and Alison Krauss\, whose performance of Tricia’s Looking in the Eyes of Love earned a GRAMMY® award. A recording artist herself\, Tricia has released eight studio recordings in multiple styles. Tricia moved to Nashville where she worked as a songwriter for three different publishing companies\, as a backing musician for Opry star Connie Smith\, Shania Twain and Paul Overstreet\, and founded the Original Women in the Round\, one of the most celebrated foursomes at Nashville’s prestigious Bluebird Café\,  with Pam Tillis\, Karen Staley and Ashley Cleveland.Tricia returned to her native Mississippi in 2006 to become director of the Delta Music Institute\, an entertainment industry studies program at her alma mater\, Delta State University. She retired from DSU in 2019 as Director Emerita\, DMI\, and Professor of the Practice Emerita in Entertainment Industry Studies. She is now serving as the music ambassador for the City of Cleveland\, MS where she is leading the Deep Roots music initiative.

At an early age\, Mosley was soaking in her music education: 90s guitar queens Patty Griffin and Shawn Colvin\, country rockers like Dwight Yoakam and Steve Earle\, and the gauntlet of great singer-songwriters from Carole King to Brandi Carlile. Mosley has built an impressive repertoire of cover songs while also honing her own songwriting skills\, and in 2016 she was the winner of the prestigious Jimmie Rodgers Songwriting Competition. After living and gigging in Charlotte\, North Carolina for several years\, she returned to the Mississippi Delta in full force.

DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in the Mississippi Delta\, Michael ‘Cadillac’ Dennis’ musical journey began with singing and playing drums with the church choir as a kid.  While majoring in music at Mississippi Valley State University\, he began dabbling with guitar and piano.  This led to his playing in a number of Gospel bands in his twenties\, before starting to play guitar for various Blues artists. Dennis formed his own band\, the Big Time Rhythm & Blues Band in the spring of 2010 and booked performances throughout the South\, Northwest\, and even Hawaii.  He recently released a single\, “2X Woman”\, which he co-produced with the help of another Deep Roots musician\, Eric Edwards.

DESCRIPTION:Pianist Robin Webb has performed as a classical and cocktail soloist\, in addition to combo and collaborative work on all seven continents\, including Antarctica. Cruise ships\, global destination resorts\, New York and European cabaret houses and clubs\, theatres on Broadway\, London’s West End and regional cities kept Robin’s performance schedule busy before returning to his boyhood home\, the Mississippi Delta. Since returning to the Delta\, Robin has been pursuing a newfound love for jazz piano\, having attended the Czech Republic Jazz Workshop\, Stanford University Jazz Workshop\, and University of North Texas workshops. Locally\, he is a member of the Delta State University Jazz Band. He holds a doctorate degree in music\, and when called upon\, he teaches in the Department of Music and the DMI Entertainment Industry Studies program at Delta State.

DESCRIPTION:Variety is the popular ‘old school’ R&B/soul duo of siblings Eric Edwards and Shara White from Cleveland\, Mississippi. They have been performing together across the country for more than 25 years. Eric and Shara\, born and raised in the Mississippi Delta\, grew up in a musical home where they both started playing and singing at the early ages of 5 and 6 years old\, respectively. Eric’s voice has been compared to the Isley Brothers\, and Shara’s voice draws comparisons to Whitney Houston\, but they both feel that God has given them each a unique voice. Although known for their R&B style\, the duo is also deeply rooted in gospel music. The duo has released an album together titled There Is No One Else\, and in addition to writing original music for God’s Anointed Voices\, Eric has released an R&B project titled Those Vinyl Days!

DESCRIPTION:Billy Maines \nAmerican singer/songwriter Billy Maines grew up in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains in a village on the Hudson River near Woodstock\, New York. He started taking guitar lessons at an early age and played in various rock bands during high school. While attending college at Cortland College in New York\, Billy began honing his writing skills for a performing duo. He plays guitar\, harmonica\, mandolin\, and fiddle across genres of Americana\, Alternative Rock and the Blues. He credits his main musical influences as The Band\, Neil Young\, Muddy Waters\, and Bob Dylan. After moving to the Mississippi Delta in 2004\, he learned to appreciate the rich heritage of the music of Mississippi\, began to perform as a solo artist and continues to do so today.

DESCRIPTION:This hot-shot south paw guitarist from Nimes\, France\, funded his move to the States by selling his Gibson Les Paul guitar. He’s forged through a rough-and-tumble 20 years\, from jamming with blues legends to playing for hire. “I grew up on all American music — Rock ’n’ Roll and Blues — but back when I was playing in France I felt somewhat like a copycat\,” Frenchie says. “But as soon as I landed in the U.S. I felt at home\, because this was where the music I loved was born.” Although he’s played with many greats over the years\, Frenchie says “the highlight of my musical career was becoming a U.S. citizen” in August 2016. \nAmerica has inspired Kevin “Frenchie” Sciou to follow his own path. From his humble beginnings to the sophomore release of his Frenchie’s Blues Destroyers album “Praise”: He defiantly beat the odds in his pursuit of the American Dream.”

DESCRIPTION:Piano prodigy Thomas Sanders was born in the river town of Natchez\, Mississippi\, and began playing piano at eight years of age\, feeling “drawn” to the piano after hearing old-time radio programs and the music of local performers. Often compared to Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley\, Thomas’ upbeat style is rooted in the genres of boogie-woogie\, rock and roll\, and country\, and he works hard every show to provide high energy entertainment for his audiences. Thomas\, currently a freshman in the entertainment industry studies program at Delta State University\, has shared the stage with Elvis impersonator Nick Perkins and Mack Daddy\, and his performance at the Delta Music Institute’s 2022 and 2023 Summer Camps drew rave reviews online. He was a featured performer at the GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi 2022 Gala in Cleveland\, Mississippi\, and the Annual Bigfoot Bash in Natchez\, Mississippi. When he’s not enjoying his hobby of ‘tinkering’ with tractors and working on his vintage 1957 Ford Fairlane\, Thomas continues to add bookings to his schedule as he works to expand his fan base throughout the Mid-South. The Mississippi River region around Natchez has produced a long list of exceptionally talented performers\, and Thomas Sanders is ready to add his name to that group.

DESCRIPTION:Danny Abraham\, well-known Cleveland men’s clothier\, started playing piano when he was six years old and played in bands and as a solo artist throughout his youth. “I played when I was at Ole Miss with a group that went all over recruiting students and was able to share the stage with celebrities like Bob Hope and others\,” says Abraham. When I returned to Cleveland\, to attend Delta State\, I joined the campus music group Renaissance\, and we literally toured all over the world. Even after I opened my store\, Abraham’s\, I continued to play with people whenever and wherever I could.” Danny’s first CD\, Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me\, was a labor of love and faith. The gospel collection of all original compositions was produced by the legendary Gordon Mote and recorded in Nashville. From Cleveland/Delta business legend to gospel performer\, Danny Abraham’s life is proof that with faith and hard work\, anything and everything is possible. \nTricia Walker is a singer and songwriter whose songs have been recorded by Faith Hill\, Patty Loveless and Alison Krauss\, whose performance of Tricia’s Looking in the Eyes of Love earned a GRAMMY® award. A recording artist herself\, Tricia has released eight studio recordings in multiple styles. Tricia moved to Nashville where she worked as a songwriter for three different publishing companies\, as a backing musician for Opry star Connie Smith\, Shania Twain and Paul Overstreet\, and founded the Original Women in the Round\, one of the most celebrated foursomes at Nashville’s prestigious Bluebird Café\,  with Pam Tillis\, Karen Staley and Ashley Cleveland. Tricia returned to her native Mississippi in 2006 to become director of the Delta Music Institute\, an entertainment industry studies program at her alma mater\, Delta State University. She retired from DSU in 2019 as Director Emerita\, DMI\, and Professor of the Practice Emerita in Entertainment Industry Studies. She is now serving as the music ambassador for the City of Cleveland\, MS where she is leading the Deep Roots music initiative. \n \n

His original music reflects his life experiences and for over 30 years\, he has toured the country\, headlining Blues clubs and festivals\, including the Juke Joint Festival\, Unity Festival\, World Catfish Festival\, Que on the Yazoo\, and the Sam Chatmon Festival\, both as a solo artist and with his band\, The Juke Daddys. \nMississippi Marshall is a two-time International Blues Challenge Semi-Finalist and a Mississippi Music Foundation award winner for Best Instrumental.  He will be representing the Delta Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in January 2024. He is currently working on his fourth album.
