SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Fall Series – Billy Maines @ Darry's Food & Drink
DESCRIPTION:Americana singer/songwriter Billy Maines grew up in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains in a village on the Hudson River near Woodstock\, New York. He started taking guitar lessons at an early age and played in various rock bands during high school. While attending college at Cortland College in New York\, Billy began honing his writing skills for a performing duo. \nAfter graduation\, Maines relocated to Boulder\, Colorado\, where the wide open music scene inspired his writing and encouraged his performing with different bands up and down the ‘front range’ of the Rockies. He plays guitar\, harmonica\, mandolin\, and fiddle across genres of Americana\, Alternative Rock and the Blues. He credits his main musical influences as The Band\, Neil Young\, Muddy Waters\, and Bob Dylan. \nAfter moving to the Mississippi Delta in 2004\, he learned to appreciate the rich heritage of the music of Mississippi and formed an original rock band called The Rind. SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Fall Series - Gran Boiz @ Airport Grocery
DESCRIPTION:Fronted by brothers Marcus and Lewon Payne of Renova\, MS\, The Gran Boiz have been playing across the region for decades. They began their musical careers early by singing in their church choir\, but\, Marcus remarks humorously\, they “eventually figured out a way to get out of the choir…and became musicians.” As they grew older\, they were influenced by a wide variety of artists: from fellow Mississippians Sam Cooke and B.B. King to music greats like Ray Charles and James Brown\, as well as pioneers of other genres such as rock legend Jimi Hendrix and rapper 2Pac. The brothers honed their instrumental abilities over the years as the backing band for blues artist Mississippi Slim who gave them the moniker Gran Boiz.

SUMMARY:Good News Gospel Festival!
DESCRIPTION:The first-ever Good News Gospel Festival will take place on the lawn at GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi on Saturday\, Sept. 3\, 2022\, beginning at 12 p.m. The free community event will celebrate the rich heritage of gospel music in the Mississippi Delta\, featuring performances by the GRAMMY®-winning Mississippi Mass Choir\, Dr. Andrew Cheairs and the Songbirds\, Chris Dixon & Joyfull Noise\, Harmony of Boyle\, The Eternal Light Singers\, G Hope Mass Choir\, Markise Jones & the Guys\, and the Lamplighters of Mound Bayou. Stan Jones\, multi-award-winning musician and Senior Director of A&R at One Entertainment\, will host the show. \n“Part of our mission here at GRAMMY Museum Mississippi is to celebrate all forms of recorded music\,” said Emily Havens\, Executive Director of GRAMMY Museum Mississippi. “While Mississippi is known for its vast contributions to the blues\, there are also a lot of incredible artists who have a deep connection to gospel music in our region. We’re looking forward to extending the Museum’s reach in the community and celebrating gospel music at our first-ever Good News Gospel Festival.” \nThe Good News Gospel Festival is free and open to the public. The event will start at 12 p.m. on the front lawn of GRAMMY Museum Mississippi. Sponsors of the festival include South Delta Planning and Development District\, Visit Mississippi\, Delta Health Center\, McDonald’s\, Visit Cleveland\, and Walmart. Additional sponsors include Entergy\, Big Front Porch Productions\, Boss Lady Workforce Transportation Force\, Byas Funeral Home\, and Zaxby’s \nThe Mississippi Mass Choir was formed over 30 years ago by Frank Williams\, a member of The Jackson Southernaires. Williams shared his vision with Malaco executive Jerry Mannery\, who gave him the green light to assemble the choir with David R. Curry selected as music director. After open auditions and months of rehearsals\, the Mississippi Mass Choir recorded its debut album in October of 1988 at the Jackson Municipal Auditorium. The self-titled debut hit #1 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart and set a gospel industry record for most consecutive weeks on the albums chart (45). It received four Stellar Awards as well as Dove and Soul Train Award nominations. The group was named Contemporary Choir of the Year and Best New Traditional Artist by the Gospel Music Workshop of America. The 1990s and 2000s found the choir touring the country fueled by more than 125 voices. One of the most popular albums of this period was Emmanuel: God with Us\, featuring He Can Fix What’s Broke and They Got the Word. In 2008\, the Mississippi Mass Choir recognized its 20th anniversary with a special live recording called The First Twenty Years. More recent offerings by the choir include Then Sings My Soul\, and Declaration of Dependence\, which featured a guest lead from GRAMMY Award winner Le’Andria Johnson on God’s on Your Side. The Choir has performed in more than 40 states across the United States\, and has traveled to the countries of Japan\, Italy\, Spain\, and Greece\, among others. They were the first gospel group to perform at the Acropolis\, and the first African- American choir to perform with a European symphonic orchestra\, when they performed on Christmas night 2010 with the 92-piece Tenerife Symphonic Orchestra in the Canary Islands. Now in its 34th year\, the Mississippi Mass Choir continues to make standard hymns and new compositions their own while remaining true to the traditional gospel choir sound that brought them safe thus far. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, visit grammymuseumms.org.

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Jake & The Pearl St. Jumpers @ Pickled Okra
DESCRIPTION:Jake and the Pearl Street Jumpers got their band’s name from the street they grew up on in Cleveland. “When I was in elementary school\, in about the fifth grade\, my friends and I were trying to do music. The majority of us lived on Pearl Street. I was the leader of the group\, so we called ourselves Jake and the Pearl Street Jumpers.” \nWith access to music lessons in school and the exposure to music in the Pentecostal church he attended\, Jake got a good background in music to help get a band started. “And we listened to the radio every chance we had\,” Jake says. “We listened to every song by every artist\, over and over again.” \n“We are upbeat and we have fun\, but there is no drinking or swearing on my stage. We have the cleanest band and the best attitude of any band I’ve ever seen\, and that’s the reason we have been going for so long.” \nWhether it’s in a smoky club\, on a flatbed trailer\, at a festival\, or at a wedding reception\, when Jake and the Pearl Street Jumpers take the stage\, it’s a sure bet that the dance floor will be crowded. For over forty-five years\, the band has played Motown and rhythm and blues tunes for thousands of people across the Delta and as far away as Chicago.

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Tricia Walker & Danny Abraham @ Ellis Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Tricia Walker is a singer and songwriter whose songs are steeped in the passion\, pain and grace of the American South. Born and raised in Mississippi\, Tricia has become one of the clearest voices of her own time and place. Her music has been recorded by Faith Hill\, Patty Loveless and Alison Krauss\, whose performance of Tricia’s Looking in the Eyes of Love earned a GRAMMY® award. A recording artist herself\, Tricia’s CD\, “The Heart of Dixie\,” thoughtfully captures the songwriter’s view of the South with well-placed lyrics and music reflecting her folk\, R & B and storytelling influences. \n“Culture is a precious\, living thing\,” Tricia says. “It has to be nurtured if it’s going to survive. Any artist or creative thinker has a responsibility to help chronicle his or her own time\, place and people. That’s the surest way to keep a culture from disappearing.” \nTricia’s instrumental skills earned her a spot backing Grand Ole Opry star Connie Smith\, with whom she played for six years. She also toured extensively with Shania Twain and Paul Overstreet as a keyboard player and vocalist. Along with Pam Tillis\, Karen Staley and Ashley Cleveland\, Tricia was a founding member of “Women in the Round\,” one of the most celebrated foursomes at Nashville’s prestigious Bluebird Café. \nTricia returned to her native Mississippi in 2006 to become director of the Delta Music Institute\, an entertainment industry studies program at her alma mater\, Delta State University. After retiring from DSU in the summer of 2019\, she was awarded the title of Director Emeritus and have been developing new musical and creative projects such as the Deep Roots music initiative for Big Front Porch Productions. \nDanny Abraham\, well-known Cleveland men’s clothier\, started playing piano when he was six years old and played in bands and as a solo artist throughout his youth. “I played when I was at Ole Miss with a group that went all over recruiting students and was able to share the stage with celebrities like Bob Hope and others\,” says Abraham. When I returned to Cleveland\, to attend Delta State\, I joined the campus music group Renaissance\, and we literally toured all over the world. Even after I opened my store\, Abraham’s\, I continued to play with people whenever and wherever I could.” \nDanny’s first CD\, Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me\, was a labor of love and faith. The gospel collection of all original compositions was produced by the legendary Gordon Mote and recorded in Nashville. Abraham said he was blessed to be surrounded by a number of talented and well-known musicians on his CD. From Cleveland/Delta business legend to gospel performer\, Danny Abraham’s life is proof that with faith and hard work\, anything and everything is possible.

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Gran Boiz @ Airport Grocery
DESCRIPTION:The Gran Boiz are a dynamic roots trio based in the Mississippi Delta. Their blend of R&B\, soul\, and blues is a perfect combination for bringing people of all backgrounds together under the sweet strains of foot-stomping\, hip-swaying music. \n\n\nFronted by brothers Marcus and Lewon Payne of Renova\, MS\, The Gran Boiz have been playing across the region for decades. \n \n

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Betzenzo @ Ellis Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Betzenzo is a jazz fusion instrumental band based in Cleveland\, MS. Founded by Ryan Betz (keys) and Jeff Laurenzo (drums)\, this duo is making waves across the state of Mississippi with their genre-fusing music. \n\n\nBetz and Laurenzo (Enzo) met in the marching band at Delta State University in 2005. The two became friends and eventually formed Betzenzo–a clever combination of their last names–and began performing their original compositions locally. Betzenzo’s music is a blend of influences from both members. Betz grew up learning traditional jazz and classical theory\, and Enzo has explored various genres as he has played with other artists. These influences\, along with alt-rock and hip-hop\, form the fusion that is\, in the words of Betz\, “Interesting\, unexpected\, but fulfilling. Like a complex\, rich black coffee.” It might be an acquired taste for some\, but their talent is undeniable.

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Mississippi Mason @ Airport Grocery
DESCRIPTION:Mississippi Mason is a singer/songwriter hailing from Columbus\, MS. Mason writes and sings music for “simple folks”–storytelling songs with catchy\, singable melodies and accessible lyrics. Having tasted the music business while growing up traveling with his dad’s southern gospel band on the weekends\, it’s no surprise that he ended up as a musician himself. \nWith influences from a wide range of old and new country\, southern rock\, and gospel artists\, Mason seems at home in a ball cap as much as the cowboy hat to which he’s dedicated an entire song. As a writer\, he seems less influenced by the bro-country of the last decade and more inspired by the writers of yesteryear. His idols are Johnny Cash\, Jamey Johnson\, and Lynyrd Skynyrd\, and it shows. There’s even a quality to his voice that seems to belong in a bygone era–his smooth tone mimics mid-century country balladeer Jim Reeves at some points\, and at others a 20th-century country tone that could have put him in the running to be the fifth member of the Highwaymen. \nMason’s newest recording effort\, a ten song collection of studio recordings titled Just The Way I Am\, shows his range as a writer. The album\, released in May 2022\, opens with the clearly southern rock anthem “Don’t Take Me Back\,” followed by the gothic-country plea to “Say a Prayer” for him on judgement day\, before transitioning to the carefree and relatable “Dancing In The Dark” (an ode to nonchalance as it relates to what life throws at you). The lighthearted “Tombigbee Bend” leads into the longing of “Outskirts of Heaven” and the romance of “Hey Babe.”  In a nod to the traditional sounds of Nashville\, Mason offers up his original song\, “Better On My Own” and a cover of the Cash classic\, “Folsom Prison Blues.” The project moves toward a conclusion with an upbeat tribute to the grandfather who handed down “This Cowboy Hat of Mine\,” and ends with a journey down “The Weary Road.” \nMason is a recent graduate from the DMI Entertainment Industry Studies program at Delta State University in Cleveland\, Mississippi\, and is signed to Cotton Row Record Company. He is currently marketing\, promoting\, and touring in support of his new album. The ultimate dream for Mason? To sing from the stage of the Grand Ole Opry and have his songs broadcast over WSM. It seems that he is well on his way. Just like country greats before him\, he writes and sings with a rugged honesty that comes across as absolutely genuine. www.mississippimason.com \n \n

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Billy Maines @ Airport Grocery
After the band dissolved\, Billy began to perform as a solo artist and continues to do so today. \n https://www.facebook.com/billymainesmusicman
