SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - The Big Time Rhythm & Blues Band @ Delta Arts Alliance Outdoor Awning
DESCRIPTION:The Big Time Rhythm &Blues Band was formed in the spring of 2010 by Michael “Cadillac” Dennis\, guitarist/vocalist\, and Tommy “Wildcat” Collins\, bass guitarist.   After playing for other artists\, the duo decided to form their own band and develop their own show. Throughout the years\, members have come and gone\, but the band continues\, and today the band’s focus remains on presenting a live performance that audiences enjoy while still doing what they love most\, making music. \n   The band performs music from multiple genres\, including Blues and R&B to Pop and Top 40 Oldies.  The band’s musical influences include B.B. King\, Prince\, Eric Clapton\, and Bill Withers.  Unlike some musicians who limit themselves to one playing style\, the Big Time Rhythm & Blues Band continues to diversify its set list\, delving into other genres of music such as jazz and classical. \n   The Big Time Rhythm & Blues Band currently performs throughout the Delta and Ark-La-Miss\, while occasionally venturing out to other areas.  They have enjoyed the privilege of pairing with Chicago Blues legend Jo Jo Murray on a number of recent performances. For the summer of 2022\, the band is preparing to hit the road and participate in a number of festivals and music events\, including the Yellow Dog Festival in Moorhead and the Cairo Blues & Heritage Festival in Cairo\, Illinois.

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Jeff McCreary @ Backdraft
DESCRIPTION:Jeff McCreary\, one of Deep Roots core artists\, is a singer-songwriter from the Delta town of Cleveland\, Mississippi. Born and raised in between Cleveland and the nearby town of Merigold\, McCreary stuck around even after a stint in Europe because of family and the irresistible draw of the Delta. McCreary’s music is the wry\, hard-earned expression of life and time in the mystic region famously described as “the most Southern place on earth.” \n\n\nAfter discovering Bob Dylan at age 16\, McCreary picked up the guitar and a pen. Inspired by Dylan’s music\, as well as Texas songwriter Townes Van Zandt\, he began to write his own songs based on a style that could be folk\, rock\, red dirt country\, anthemic\, Shakespearean\, sardonic\, heartwarming\, dark\, humorous\, or any/all of the above. Simply put\, McCreary explores all facets of the broad genre of Americana in his writing and playing. He writes with a specificity that makes his music all the more relatable\, offering an honest look at life and his surroundings. Songwriting is his passion to him\, it feels like it’s what he’s on earth to do. “They show up sometimes out of the blue\,” he says of his songs. “It’s like a gift.” \n\n\n“If you like roots or country or folk music\, I’m your guy. Or if you just like drinking beer with some background noise\, I’m also your guy\,” McCreary says just before a gig. While McCreary’s seemingly straightforward style may be conducive to head-nodding\, beer-drinking\, and even toe-tapping\, it shouldn’t be reduced to just background “noise.” He produces art in the form of music that sounds good and seems simple on the surface\, but reveals more and more upon the second or third or tenth listen. McCreary’s music is for the listener who wants to hear a straight-up country song or hum along with a pleasant folk tune\, and it’s for the guy in the corner lost in thought\, nursing a beer and his wounds. Like the unseen\, swift current of the nearby Mississippi River\, Jeff McCreary’s music proves that first appearances can be deceiving. His EP\, Rough Patch\, was released in 2021.

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Mississippi Mason @ Pickled Okra
DESCRIPTION:Mississippi Mason is a singer/songwriter hailing from Columbus\, MS. Mason writes and sings music for “simple folks”–storytelling songs with catchy\, singable melodies and accessible lyrics. Having tasted the music business while growing up traveling with his dad’s southern gospel band on the weekends\, it’s no surprise that he ended up as a musician himself. \nWith influences from a wide range of old and new country\, southern rock\, and gospel artists\, Mason seems at home in a ball cap as much as the cowboy hat to which he’s dedicated an entire song. As a writer\, he seems less influenced by the bro-country of the last decade and more inspired by the writers of yesteryear. His idols are Johnny Cash\, Jamey Johnson\, and Lynyrd Skynyrd\, and it shows. There’s even a quality to his voice that seems to belong in a bygone era–his smooth tone mimics mid-century country balladeer Jim Reeves at some points\, and at others a 20th-century country tone that could have put him in the running to be the fifth member of the Highwaymen. \nMason’s newest recording effort\, a ten song collection of studio recordings titled Just The Way I Am\, shows his range as a writer. The album\, released in May 2022\, opens with the clearly southern rock anthem “Don’t Take Me Back\,” followed by the gothic-country plea to “Say a Prayer” for him on judgement day\, before transitioning to the carefree and relatable “Dancing In The Dark” (an ode to nonchalance as it relates to what life throws at you). The lighthearted “Tombigbee Bend” leads into the longing of “Outskirts of Heaven” and the romance of “Hey Babe.”  In a nod to the traditional sounds of Nashville\, Mason offers up his original song\, “Better On My Own” and a cover of the Cash classic\, “Folsom Prison Blues.” The project moves toward a conclusion with an upbeat tribute to the grandfather who handed down “This Cowboy Hat of Mine\,” and ends with a journey down “The Weary Road.” \nMason is a recent graduate from the DMI Entertainment Industry Studies program at Delta State University in Cleveland\, Mississippi\, and is signed to Cotton Row Record Company. He is currently marketing\, promoting\, and touring in support of his new album. The ultimate dream for Mason? To sing from the stage of the Grand Ole Opry and have his songs broadcast over WSM. It seems that he is well on his way. Just like country greats before him\, he writes and sings with a rugged honesty that comes across as absolutely genuine. www.mississippimason.com

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Variety @ DAA Outdoor Awning
DESCRIPTION:Variety is the popular ‘old school’ R&B/soul duo of siblings Eric Edwards and Shara White from Cleveland\, Mississippi. They have been performing together across the country for more than 25 years. Their upbeat repertoire is the kind of music that\, according to Eric\, makes audiences want to ‘eat barbecue and drink cold beer.’ \n\n\nEric and Shara\, born and raised in the Mississippi Delta\, grew up in a musical home where they both started playing and singing at the early ages of 5 and 6 years old\, respectively. While citing their father\, Eddie Lee Edwards\, as their primary musical influence\, they also list Whitney Houston\, Mariah Carey\, Michael Jackson\, Prince\, and Quincy Jones as musicians whom they admire and respect. Both Eric and Shara are quick to acknowledge the contributions of their former band director\, Mr. James Stamps\, and musical friends Dr. Alphonso Sanders and Joe Johnson in encouraging and shaping the duo’s musical development and direction. \n\n\nEric’s voice has been compared to the Isley Brothers\, and Shara’s voice draws comparisons to Whitney Houston\, but they both feel that God has given them each a unique voice. Although known for their R&B style\, the duo is also deeply rooted in gospel music. The duo has released an album together titled There Is No One Else\, and in addition to writing original music for God’s Anointed Voices\, Eric has released an R&B project titled Those Vinyl Days! \n\n\nAs veteran entertainers\, Variety brings an undeniable joy and passion to playing and singing music because\, as Eric and Shara both say\, “it’s what we enjoy doing.” And for this duo…it definitely shows.

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Gran Boiz @ Pickled Okra
DESCRIPTION:The Gran Boiz are a dynamic roots trio based in the Mississippi Delta. Their blend of R&B\, soul\, and blues is a perfect combination for bringing people of all backgrounds together under the sweet strains of foot-stomping\, hip-swaying music.\n\nFronted by brothers Marcus and Lewon Payne of Renova\, MS\, The Gran Boiz have been playing across the region for decades. They began their musical careers early by singing in their church choir\, but\, Marcus remarks humorously\, they “eventually figured out a way to get out of the choir…and became musicians.” As they grew older\, they were influenced by a wide variety of artists: from fellow Mississippians Sam Cooke and B.B. King to music greats like Ray Charles and James Brown\, as well as pioneers of other genres such as rock legend Jimi Hendrix and rapper 2Pac. The brothers honed their instrumental abilities over the years as the backing band for blues artist Mississippi Slim who gave them the moniker Gran Boiz. \n\n\nTheir various influences and multiple musical abilities have earned them the right to share the stage with soul/R&B singers Betty Padgett\, TK Soul\, Benny Lattimore\, and Sir Charles Jones\, along with GRAMMY® winner Bobby Rush\, and even hip hop group Three 6 Mafia. “We can fit in any genre and can play pretty much anything\,” says Marcus. Depending on the event and the environment\, The Gran Boiz play blues\, R&B\, soul\, gospel\, pop\, reggae\, and even country.

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Jeff McCreary @ The Old Depot

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Variety @ Darry's Eat & Drink
DESCRIPTION:Variety is the popular ‘old school’ R&B/soul duo of siblings Eric Edwards and Shara White from Cleveland\, Mississippi. They have been performing together across the country for more than 25 years. Their upbeat repertoire is the kind of music that\, according to Eric\, makes audiences want to ‘eat barbecue and drink cold beer.’\n\nEric and Shara\, born and raised in the Mississippi Delta\, grew up in a musical home where they both started playing and singing at the early ages of 5 and 6 years old\, respectively. \n\n\n\nAs veteran entertainers\, Variety brings an undeniable joy and passion to playing and singing music because\, as Eric and Shara both say\, “it’s what we enjoy doing.” And for this duo…it definitely shows.

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Betzenzo @ The Old Depot
DESCRIPTION:Betzenzo is a jazz fusion instrumental band based in Cleveland\, MS. Founded by Ryan Betz (keys) and Jeff Laurenzo (drums)\, this duo is making waves across the state of Mississippi with their genre-fusing music. \n\n\nBetz and Laurenzo (Enzo) met in the marching band at Delta State University in 2005. The two became friends and eventually formed Betzenzo–a clever combination of their last names–and began performing their original compositions locally. Betzenzo’s music is a blend of influences from both members. Betz grew up learning traditional jazz and classical theory\, and Enzo has explored various genres as he has played with other artists. These influences\, along with alt-rock and hip-hop\, form the fusion that is\, in the words of Betz\, “Interesting\, unexpected\, but fulfilling. Like a complex\, rich black coffee.” It might be an acquired taste for some\, but their talent is undeniable. \n\n\nBetzenzo’s performances to date have been in mostly festival or bar settings\, with some appearances at special events for GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi and even an opening slot for Trombone Shorty at the Bologna Performing Arts Center in Cleveland\, Mississippi. Their laid back but engaging music makes for great entertainment at almost any event. The combined energy and creativity of the two is what drives their performances. What they present is accessible jazz: music that is complicated\, but enjoyable. While not compromising their craft\, they incorporate elements of rock and blues and even hip-hop to make their music more attractive to the average listener. \n\n\n“Surprising” seems like a good descriptor for Betzenzo; this “jam band” brings a fresh\, modern feel to jazz. As tasting notes are unique to a complex\, rich\, black coffee\, so is the blend of genres the duo employs to make the music their own. And like a surprisingly flavorful black coffee\, Betzenzo’s music entices the listener to take another sip. https://www.facebook.com/Betzenzo

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Billy Maines @ Airport Grocery
DESCRIPTION:American singer/songwriter Billy Maines grew up in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains in a village on the Hudson River near Woodstock\, New York. He started taking guitar lessons at an early age and played in various rock bands during high school. While attending college at Cortland College in New York\, Billy began honing his writing skills for a performing duo. After graduation\, Maines relocated to Boulder\, Colorado\, where the wide open music scene inspired his writing and encouraged his performing with different bands up and down the ‘front range’ of the Rockies. He plays guitar\, harmonica\, mandolin\, and fiddle across genres of Americana\, Alternative Rock and the Blues. He credits his main musical influences as The Band\, Neil Young\, Muddy Waters\, and Bob Dylan. After moving to the Mississippi Delta in 2004\, he learned to appreciate the rich heritage of the music of Mississippi and formed an original rock band called The Rind. After the band dissolved\, Billy began to perform as a solo artist and continues to do so today. https://www.facebook.com/billymainesmusicman

SUMMARY:2022 Deep Roots Summer Series - Mason Honnoll @ DAA Outdoor Awning

SUMMARY:Deep Roots 2022 Winter/Spring Series - Libby Rae Watson
DESCRIPTION:Libby Rae Watson grew up in Mississippi a few blocks from the Gulf of Mexico. Not exactly the heart of the Delta and the delta blues\, but just a few hours drive away. Captivated by the music\, she became deeply involved with the Delta in the mid 1970’s\, searching\, exploring\, documenting\, meeting and playing with all the blues artists she could find. People like Big Joe Williams\, Furry Lewis\, Johnny Woods\, Eugene Powell\, Son Thomas and many more. Legends and obscurities. She was a 22 year old  girl venturing into places not many would dare to enter. But it was her friendship with Hollandale’s Sam Chatmon that influenced her the most. They became fast friends from day one and remained that way until his death in 1983\, where Libby Rae performed “Sitting On Top Of The World” at his funeral. Now\, after years of staying close to home with her band\, The Liberaetors\, Libby Rae has come back to the old delta Blues where she started….and back to the road. \nLibby Rae has performed at many festivals over her career….the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival\,  King Biscuit Festival\, Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale\, MS\, The Mighty Mississippi River Festival in Greenville\, MS\, and The Sam Chatmon Festival in Hollandale\, MS to name a few. She has performed House Concerts from Canada to Birdie’s Roadhouse in Varnado\, La…from the Shack Up Inn in Clarksdale\, MS to the FloraBama in Orange Beach\, AL and has been a semi-finalist multiple years at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. She has toured with Toronto based Bluesman\, Doc MacLean\, and with Rambling Steve Gardner\, Bill Steber\, and Wes Lee as the Jericho Road Show. \nA classic Mississippi blueswoman/singer songwriter…Libby Rae Watson. \nhttps://www.libbyrae.com \n \n

SUMMARY:Deep Roots 2022 Winter/Spring Series - Blackwater Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Blackwater Trio is a folk/rock band that uses two guitars\, a violin and three-part harmony to evoke a powerful response from their audience.  Based in Clarksdale\, Mississippi\, the Trio was formed in the fall of 2013 when violinist Alice Hasen\, then a high school band director\, sat in with local guitarists Walt Busby and Seth Stroud.  The two Delta natives quickly turned the Vermont classical violinist to the “dark side” and the group gained popularity. The individual influences of Stroud\, Busby and Hasen are widely varied: Led Zeppelin\, the Beatles\, Neil Young\, Crosby Stills & Nash\, the Fleet Foxes\, Stephane Grappelli\, Natalie McMaster\, and the classical canon\, just to name a few.  The sound that emerges is a refreshing mix of opposites – Stroud’s sometimes angelic\, sometimes rough-hewn vocals; Busby’s psychedelic electric guitar layered over intricate acoustic patterns; Hasen’s honed technique supporting edgier styles outside the bounds of either violin or fiddle. The group released their debut album\, Cheshire Moon\, in August 2017.  Touring regularly through Mississippi\, Tennessee\, Arkansas and up the East Coast\, the Trio is a favorite of local festivals and has been featured in media including Delta Magazine and Memphis’ WEVL radio. Their live shows include original music as well as reinterpreted covers. Says culture blog Delta Bohemian: “With an eclectic medley of familiar yet made-their-own-tunes and with now many of their own songs\, this band is uniquely peerless.”\n\nhttps://blackwatertrio.com

SUMMARY:Deep Roots: Live Downtown! - Delta String Band and Craig Adams
DESCRIPTION:In a Deep Roots split bill\, the Delta String Band and Craig Adams will be sharing the stage for a special night of music! The Delta String Band is best described as an Americana band. They play a variety of styles\, from folk and bluegrass to straight-up country. With influences like bluegrass great Ralph Stanley\, folk master John Prine\, pure country kings Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings\, and even genre-fusing groups like the Grateful Dead\, they bring their own flavor to the music they play. “The old school way” to them\, means playing music in its truest\, purest\, stripped-down form. Americana artist Craig Adams grew up in the riverside town of Rosedale with a knack for storytelling. He blends rock\, folk\, and country influences to form his unique blend of music. \n \n
