SUMMARY:Deep Roots Winter Series - Billy Maines @ Backdraft
DESCRIPTION:American singer/songwriter Billy Maines grew up in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains in a village on the Hudson River near Woodstock\, New York. He started taking guitar lessons at an early age and played in various rock bands during high school. While attending college at Cortland College in New York\, Billy began honing his writing skills for a performing duo. After graduation\, Maines relocated to Boulder\, Colorado\, performing with different bands up and down the ‘front range’ of the Rockies. He plays guitar\, harmonica\, mandolin\, and fiddle across genres of Americana\, Alternative Rock and the Blues. He credits his main musical influences as The Band\, Neil Young\, Muddy Waters\, and Bob Dylan. After moving to the Mississippi Delta in 2004\, he learned to appreciate the rich heritage of the music of Mississippi\, began to perform as a solo artist and continues to do so today.

DESCRIPTION:This hot-shot south paw guitarist from Nimes\, France\, funded his move to the States by selling his Gibson Les Paul guitar. He’s forged through a rough-and-tumble 20 years\, from jamming with blues legends to playing for hire. “I grew up on all American music — Rock ’n’ Roll and Blues — but back when I was playing in France I felt somewhat like a copycat\,” Frenchie says. “But as soon as I landed in the U.S. I felt at home\, because this was where the music I loved was born.” Although he’s played with many greats over the years\, Frenchie says “the highlight of my musical career was becoming a U.S. citizen” in August 2016.  \nAmerica has inspired Kevin “Frenchie” Sciou to follow his own path. From his humble beginnings to the sophomore release of his Frenchie’s Blues Destroyers album “Praise”: He defiantly beat the odds in his pursuit of the American Dream.”

DESCRIPTION:Pianist Robin Webb has performed as a classical and cocktail soloist\, in addition to combo and collaborative work on all seven continents\, including Antarctica. Cruise ships\, global destination resorts\, New York and European cabaret houses and clubs\, theatres on Broadway\, London’s West End and regional cities kept Robin’s performance schedule busy before returning to his boyhood home\, the Mississippi Delta. Since returning to the Delta\, Robin has been pursuing a newfound love for jazz piano\, having attended the Czech Republic Jazz Workshop\, Stanford University Jazz Workshop\, and University of North Texas workshops. Locally\, he is a member of the Delta State University Jazz Band. He holds a doctorate degree in music\, and when called upon\, he teaches in the Department of Music and the DMI Entertainment Industry Studies program at Delta State.

DESCRIPTION:Mississippi Mason is a singer/songwriter hailing from Columbus\, MS. Mason writes and sings music for “simple folks”–storytelling songs with catchy\, singable melodies and accessible lyrics. Having tasted the music business while growing up traveling with his dad’s southern gospel band on the weekends\, it’s no surprise that he ended up as a musician himself. With influences from a wide range of old and new country\, southern rock\, and gospel artists\, Mason seems at home in a ball cap as much as the cowboy hat to which he’s dedicated an entire song. As a writer\, he seems less influenced by the bro-country of the last decade and more inspired by the writers of yesteryear. His idols are Johnny Cash\, Jamey Johnson\, and Lynyrd Skynyrd\, and it shows.

DESCRIPTION:Alanna Mosley is a singer-songwriter from Carrollton\, Mississippi. Her music—best described as Americana or roots—blurs genre lines\, and her cover tune catalog spans decades. At an early age\, Mosley was soaking in her music education: 90s guitar queens Patty Griffin and Shawn Colvin\, country rockers like Dwight Yoakam and Steve Earle\, and the gauntlet of great singer-songwriters from Carole King to Brandi Carlile. She began playing guitar at the age of 12 and hasn’t quit since. Over the years\, Mosley has built an impressive repertoire of cover songs while also honing her own songwriting skills. She released an EP of original music in 2014\, and in 2016 she was the winner of the prestigious Jimmie Rodgers Songwriting Competition.

Marshall’s original guitar stylings range from old style Delta Blues to in-your-face blues boogie. His original music reflects his life experiences and for over 30 years\, he has toured the country\, headlining Blues clubs and festivals\, including the Juke Joint Festival\, Unity Festival\, World Catfish Festival\, Que on the Yazoo\, and the Sam Chatmon Festival\, both as a solo artist and with his band\, The Juke Daddys. Mississippi Marshall is a two-time International Blues Challenge Semi-Finalist and a Mississippi Music Foundation award winner for Best Instrumental.  He is currently working on his fourth album.

DESCRIPTION:Pianist Robin Webb has performed as a classical and cocktail soloist\, in addition to combo and collaborative work on all seven continents\, including Antarctica. Cruise ships\, global destination resorts\, New York and European cabaret houses and clubs\, theatres on Broadway\, London’s West End and regional cities kept Robin’s performance schedule busy before returning to his boyhood home\, the Mississippi Delta. Since returning to the Delta\, Robin has been pursuing a newfound love for jazz piano\, having attended the Czech Republic Jazz Workshop\, Stanford University Jazz Workshop\, and University of North Texas workshops. Locally\, he is a member of the Delta State University Jazz Band. He holds a doctorate degree in music\, and when called upon\, he teaches in the Department of Music and the DMI Entertainment Industry Studies program at Delta State.
