SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Fall Series - Drew Pulliam @ Backdraft
DESCRIPTION:Whether writing music\, performing in theater\, or making movies with his friends\, Drew Pulliam always had a knack for storytelling. Growing up\, his mother ran a theater in his hometown of Jonesboro\, AR and has been surrounded by stories his entire life. He recalls\, “I remember playing with my toys on the stage while hearing the latest artistic argument over music and lighting. When we’d come home from rehearsal with my five older brothers and sisters\, the dinner table was filled with the stories about my brother’s latest girlfriend or my sister’s latest girl squabble. Pretty soon I was telling stories of my own.” Drew paired up with Mississippi hitmaker Steve Azar to help these stories come to life with notable musicians such as Chad Cromwell on drums\, Kenny Greenberg on Guitar\, Barry Bays on bass\, and Jonathan Yudkin on cello. Drew’s journey to adulthood and stories along the way helped shape the body of work he created for his debut EP due in 2023. Whether it’s the epic ballad “Fight Our All” that he describes as the song I want the world to hear right now\, or “16 Going On 60\,” which tackles his sudden launch into being an adult\, the relatable collection is set to delight listeners of all ages.

SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Fall Series - Charles Sullivan @ Bar Fontaine
DESCRIPTION:Singer/songwriter Charles Sullivan is a member of the Delta String Band\, an Americana band based out of Greenville\, Mississippi. Similar to what the band presents\, Sullivan sings a variety of styles\, from folk and bluegrass to straight-up country. With influences like bluegrass great Ralph Stanley\, folk master John Prine\, pure country kings Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings\, and even genre-fusing groups like the Grateful Dead\, Sullivan brings his own flavor to the music he plays\, and that “old school way” means playing music in its truest\, purest\, stripped-down form.

SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Fall Series - Variety @ 8 West Grille
DESCRIPTION:Variety is the popular ‘old school’ R&B/soul duo of siblings Eric Edwards and Shara White from Cleveland\, Mississippi. They have been performing together across the country for more than 25 years. Their upbeat repertoire is the kind of music that\, according to Eric\, makes audiences want to ‘eat barbecue and drink cold beer.’ \nEric and Shara\, born and raised in the Mississippi Delta\, grew up in a musical home where they both started playing and singing at the early ages of 5 and 6 years old\, respectively. While citing their father\, Eddie Lee Edwards\, as their primary musical influence\, they also are quick to acknowledge the contributions of their former band director\, Mr. James Stamps\, and musical friends Dr. Alphonso Sanders and Joe Johnson in encouraging and shaping the duo’s musical development and direction. \nEric’s voice has been compared to the Isley Brothers\, and Shara’s voice draws comparisons to Whitney Houston\, but they both feel that God has given them each a unique voice. Although known for their R&B style\, the duo is also deeply rooted in gospel music. The duo has released an album together titled There Is No One Else\, and in addition to writing original music for God’s Anointed Voices\, Eric has released an R&B project titled Those Vinyl Days!

DESCRIPTION:American singer/songwriter Billy Maines grew up in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains in a village on the Hudson River near Woodstock\, New York. He started taking guitar lessons at an early age and played in various rock bands during high school. While attending college at Cortland College in New York\, Billy began honing his writing skills for a performing duo. SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Fall Series - Alanna Mosley @ Backdraft
DESCRIPTION:Alanna Mosley is a singer-songwriter from Carrollton\, Mississippi. Her music—best described as Americana or roots—blurs genre lines\, and her cover tune catalog spans decades. With guitar in hand\, Mosley is an unstoppable jukebox of great music that invites the listener to keep humming along. \nAt an early age\, Mosley was soaking in her music education: 90s guitar queens Patty Griffin and Shawn Colvin\, country rockers like Dwight Yoakam and Steve Earle\, and the gauntlet of great singer-songwriters from Carole King to Brandi Carlile. She began playing guitar at the age of 12 and hasn’t quit since. Over the years\, Mosley has built an impressive repertoire of cover songs while also honing her own songwriting skills. She released an EP of original music in 2014\, and in 2016 she was the winner of the prestigious Jimmie Rodgers Songwriting Competition. After living and gigging in Charlotte\, North Carolina for several years\, she returned to the Mississippi Delta in full force. If you’re a lover of great music in need of some shade\, find out where Alanna Mosley might be playing near you at www.alannamosley.com.

SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Fall Series - Jeff McCreary and Craig Adams @ Bar Fontaine
DESCRIPTION:Jeff McCreary is a singer-songwriter from the Delta town of Cleveland\, Mississippi. Born and raised in between Cleveland and the nearby town of Merigold\, McCreary stuck around even after a stint in Europe because of family and the irresistible draw of the Delta. McCreary’s music is the wry\, hard-earned expression of life and time in the mystic region famously described as “the most Southern place on earth.” After discovering Bob Dylan at age 16\, McCreary picked up the guitar and a pen. Inspired by Dylan’s music\, as well as Texas songwriter Townes Van Zandt\, he began to write his own songs based on a style that could be folk\, rock\, red dirt country\, anthemic\, Shakespearean\, sardonic\, heartwarming\, dark\, humorous\, or any/all of the above. Simply put\, McCreary explores all facets of the broad genre of Americana in his writing and playing. He writes with a specificity that makes his music all the more relatable\, offering an honest look at life and his surroundings. Songwriting is his passion to him\, it feels like it’s what he’s on earth to do. “They show up sometimes out of the blue\,” he says of his songs. “It’s like a gift.” \nCraig Adams is a singer\, songwriter\, and musician from Cleveland\, Mississippi. Raised in the nearby riverside town of Rosedale\, Adams is a writer with a knack for storytelling\, and a musician capable of anything from raucous rockabilly to gentle folk ballads. He was surrounded by music as a child and began playing guitar and writing his own songs by the age of twelve. Inspired by masters of the craft like Bob Dylan\, John Prine\, Doug Sahm and more\, Adams is a songwriter first and foremost. There is plenty to write about life in the Mississippi Delta\, and he spells out those real-life stories and draws character sketches with ease.

SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Fall Series - Mississippi Mason @ Backdraft
DESCRIPTION:Mississippi Mason is a singer/songwriter hailing from Columbus\, MS. Mason writes and sings music for “simple folks”–storytelling songs with catchy\, singable melodies and accessible lyrics. Having tasted the music business while growing up traveling with his dad’s southern gospel band on the weekends\, it’s no surprise that he ended up as a musician himself. \nWith influences from a wide range of old and new country\, southern rock\, and gospel artists\, Mason seems at home in a ball cap as much as the cowboy hat to which he’s dedicated an entire song. As a writer\, he seems less influenced by the bro-country of the last decade and more inspired by the writers of yesteryear. His idols are Johnny Cash\, Jamey Johnson\, and Lynyrd Skynyrd\, and it shows.

SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Fall Series - Thomas "Little Killer" Sanders @ Darry's Food & Drink
DESCRIPTION:Piano prodigy Thomas Sanders was born in the river town of Natchez\, Mississippi\, and began playing piano at eight years of age\, feeling “drawn” to the piano after hearing old-time radio programs and the music of local performers. Often compared to Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley\, Thomas’ upbeat style is rooted in the genres of boogie-woogie\, rock and roll\, and country\, and he works hard every show to provide high energy entertainment for his audiences. Thomas\, currently a freshman in the entertainment industry studies program at Delta State University\, has shared the stage with Elvis impersonator Nick Perkins and Mack Daddy\, and his performance at the Delta Music Institute’s 2022 and 2023 Summer Camps drew rave reviews online. He was a featured performer at the GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi 2022 Gala in Cleveland\, Mississippi\, and the Annual Bigfoot Bash in Natchez\, Mississippi. When he’s not enjoying his hobby of ‘tinkering’ with tractors and working on his vintage 1957 Ford Fairlane\, Thomas continues to add bookings to his schedule as he works to expand his fan base throughout the Mid-South. The Mississippi River region around Natchez has produced a long list of exceptionally talented performers\, and Thomas Sanders is ready to add his name to that group.

SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Fall Series - Danny Abraham @ Backdraft
DESCRIPTION:Danny Abraham\, well-known Cleveland men’s clothier\, started playing piano when he was six years old and played in bands and as a solo artist throughout his youth. “I played when I was at Ole Miss with a group that went all over recruiting students and was able to share the stage with celebrities like Bob Hope and others\,” says Abraham. When I returned to Cleveland\, to attend Delta State\, I joined the campus music group Renaissance\, and we literally toured all over the world. Even after I opened my store\, Abraham’s\, I continued to play with people whenever and wherever I could.” Danny’s first CD\, Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me\, was a labor of love and faith. The gospel collection of all original compositions was produced by the legendary Gordon Mote and recorded in Nashville. Abraham said he was blessed to be surrounded by a number of talented and well-known musicians on his CD. From Cleveland/Delta business legend to gospel performer\, Danny Abraham’s life is proof that with faith and hard work\, anything and everything is possible.

SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Fall Series - Drew Pulliam @ Darry's Food & Drink
Pretty soon I was telling stories of my own.” \nDrew’s journey to adulthood and stories along the way helped shape the body of work he created for his debut EP due in 2023. Whether it’s the epic ballad “Fight Our All” that he describes as the song I want the world to hear right now\, or “16 Going On 60\,” which tackles his sudden launch into being an adult\, the relatable collection is set to delight listeners of all ages. \n \n

SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Fall Series - Aubrey Holman @ Backdraft
DESCRIPTION:Aubrey Holman is a singer-songwriter hailing from the river city of Greenville\, Mississippi. “Americana” might be the category which most broadly defines his acoustic blend of blues\, folk\, country\, and rock. His original music tends toward dark and emotional with a few spots of brightness here and there. Like the mighty Mississippi whose reach covers over half of the United States\, his music combines genres and connects listeners. Over the years\, he has performed with other bands and as a solo musician. He’s comfortable on larger stages\, such as the Neshoba County Fair\, where he performed with his band Shake Bone Fest\, and even more so in intimate venues. Most of his time performing is spent at restaurants and private parties\, where he is free to soothe or excite the crowd with his rhythmic guitar playing and emotionally driven lyrics. Though it’s been several years since his last public release\, Aubrey hasn’t been sitting idle. He continues to add to his repertoire of cover material while also building his own catalog of original songs and performs multiple nights a week at local and regional venues. Aubrey Holman rolls on strong and steady\, like the current of the Mississippi River\, diligently creating and performing the music he loves.

SUMMARY:2023 Deep Roots Fall Series - Variety @ Bar Fontaine

DESCRIPTION:Singer/songwriter Charles Sullivan is a member of the Delta String Band\, an Americana band based out of Greenville\, Mississippi.
